Finding E85 Along Your Memorial Day Travel Route

It’s just a few days away from Memorial Day! While the intent of the holiday is to honor those who died during service in the U.S. military, Memorial Day weekend is also widely considered to be the weekend that officially kicks off summer. Some simply look forward to an extra day off work or school, yet many others plan to travel over the coming days. Whether it’s camping and fishing, visits to the cabin, or simply a road trip to be with family, this traditionally busy travel weekend could mean lots of miles on your vehicle.

As an avid reader of blog, you already know that flex fuel vehicle (FFV) drivers can reduce their tailpipe emissions by choosing E85 over traditional gasoline, but did you know that FFV drivers will generally also spend less for every gallon pumped by using E85 or other ethanol blends instead of regular gasoline? So before you hit the road this weekend, wouldn't you like to know where you can find E85? While the main focus at has been sharing the benefits of E85 and E15 relative to Minnesota and all the places you can find the fuel, today we’re going beyond our state borders, since many of you will this weekend, too!

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) is a wonderful resource when you are travelling outside Minnesota. AFDC has a list of all ethanol fueling stations across the country, and the Map a Route tool allows users to find every station with E85 along their path. Simply input a starting and ending point, select "Ethanol (E85)" as the type of fuel, and see every E85 station along your planned route! The tool defaults to showing any stations within five miles of your route, but if you wish not to stray that far, you can limit it to show only stations less than one mile off the main route. The picture to the right shows what the site looks like (click to enlarge).

As an example, if you are driving from the Twin Cities to see the Indy 500 this Memorial Day, you would pass by 57 stations that are less than one mile off the road! That’s plenty of convenient places to fill your FFV with cleaner, renewable E85. To make it even easier, you can download the list of stations along the route so you always know your stopping options. Better yet, why not download the AFDC station locator app on your smart phone and always be ready to find the nearest station when travelling!
